It really sucks

Well, it's supposed to, and it does the job well. I can say the slip fitting is a bit loose if you try to glue it to regular 1-1/2"" pvc pipe; I may have to add glue.

replaces 20 yr old offset suction

Replaced offset suction from 20 yr old hot tub with this in-line. Used heavy duty PVC cement and flexible PVC tubing. No leaks.

I assume the gasket on the 1.5 inch spa suction goes on the water side? Do you add silicone or something on the back? Thanks in advance.

For best results, apply a thin film of silicone sealant to the water side of the spa shell, then place the gasket on top of the film. You don't need any silicone sealant on the dry side of the spa shell.
